Biography / Exhibitions

_____________________

Berriman is a Cornish artist, who is influenced by her specific heritage and who uses many elements from modernist theatre and film to recent social theory about behavioural mechanisms in institutional contexts to create sculptural works.

Molluscs Hunt Wizards is her current body of work that looks for markers and boundaries of experience and potential within desert and plains landscapes. During the early research stages of the project the artist travelled via Beijing to the Mongolian Gobi, to explore nomadic herder relationships with, and reading of, the epic and often harsh terrain. She also travelled to Australia, where she made excursions into the central red deserts and the world heritage Willandra Lakes region.

Berriman explores how moments of experience become form, objects to be handled and reviewed again and again, and in turn how objects can instigate or suggest moments of action or experience. This project makes a correlation between landscape and personal narratives, looking for the boundaries and markers of significant moments of action or experience that sit within both. Within the overall narrative of Molluscs Hunt Wizards, molluscs and wizards act as metaphors for gradual and dynamic modes of action or experience, molluscs being gradual, wizards being dynamic.

Born in 1972 in Penzance, Cornwall, Sovay Berriman graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2003. Currently based in London Berriman works across sculpture, drawing, text and event. Recent solo exhibitions include the Sepulchre by the Sea (2013 , Malgras|Naudet, Manchester, ||HOST|| (2012) a collaboration with Laura Mansfield as part of the Liverpool Biennial, and Symbol Archive: Visual Language , (2013) with Spacex, Exeter, Engagement Network and a team of Contributors from the South West. Group exhibitions include The Starseed Transmissions (2013), Enclave, London.
