Divinations of A World To Come, featuring Hervé Beuze and David Gumbs, curated by Bokantaj (Alinta Sara and Aminat Lawal Agoro) Galleries 1 and 2
2 Oct– 17 Nov 2018
theAgency. Gallery presents Divinations for the World to Come. The exhibition introduces works by Hervé Beuze(Martinique) and David Gumbs (St Martin/Martinique) for the first time in the UK. The exhibition will explore the intersection of art and literature, and their roles in our conceptions of the future. Positioned cartographically and conceptually as heirs to the seminal ideas of Aimé Césaire, Franz Fanon, and Édouard Glissant, the two Caribbean artists address the role of the body in relation to emergent and future technologies. This is a juxtaposition of the work of two artist with very divergent mediums of creation; Hervé Beuze work is grounded in the sculptural or monumental installation. David Gumbs takes a more conceptual approach to through his drawings and interactive multi-media installations.
The exhibition is curated by Bokantaj, a collaborative initiative that aims to raise greater awareness about the historical trajectories and universal themes that connect communities in the global South, and in so doing help to foster greater dialogue and collaboration.
