Biography/Exhibitions/Text

Doris A. Day (* 1982) is a male British painter based in London.

Doris Day is a post-digital painter whose work oscillates between abstraction and representation. Day's paintings feature a plethora of references from British portrait painters such as Gainsborough and Lawrence to Gerhard Richter, George Condo and Christopher Wool. By acknowledging these artists as both influences and inspirations, he recognizes the historicity and development of painting and addresses the medium's limitations and possibilities. In other words, Day's subject matter is the discipline of painting, which he imbues with a strong sense of humor and a disorderly, almost anarchic, use of color.

In a post capitalist society, where images are aimed at being consumed, Day's approach is a Warholian one: he integrates symbols of the culture industry in his work, which often gain resonance through unpredictable juxtaposition, satire, re-contextualization, and even the very act of erasure. These broken narratives hint at the endless possibilities that wait to be discovered by the viewer. His name is the very epitome of his irreverence. A childhood nickname turned artist identity is a fitting tribute to his approach.
