theAgency. Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of works by the Belfast based artist Helena Hamilton in London.  Semblance and Event I is the first of two successive solo exhibitions, the second of which will take place at the Millennium Court Art Centre, Portadown, Northern Ireland in April 2018. The exhibitions will bring together elements of Hamilton’s innovative practice, which crosses the lines between object, digital interaction and action/performance. Sound, both incidental and composed, underpins her works like a fourth dimension.

After years of researching the use of electronic and digital means in performance pieces Hamilton began expanding her practice to objects and the resonance of materiality by excavating and frustrating their function and appearance. During a 2-month residency in Tokyo she began with austere examinations of materials, matter and personal thought and explored them with processes of sonic tracking and touch, which made use of ascetic practices of repetition. She began re-negotiating the legacy of minimalism, both in music as well as visual formalism with the added element of liveness.  It enables her to explore new aspects of the meaning of objects as physical and sociological events via their sonic and embodied resonance.

Helena Hamilton’s practice is pioneering work by a female artist who connects the sonic with conceptual materialism through digital means as an expansion of art practice.  Using sonic explorations for a multidimensional formalism opens up new ways of experiencing art as a lived event, which includes sculpture, photography, works on paper, site-specific action and live sound.

Helena Hamilton (b. 1986, N. Ireland) lives and works in Belfast and is a member of Flax Studios.  She received MA in Sonic Arts from SARC, Queen’s University Belfast (2014).  She is based at Belfast.  Her work has been exhibited and performed in both gallery spaces and contemporary music/sound festivals across UK & Ireland as well as Berlin, Rome, Tokyo and New York.  Recent solo exhibitions include: Order, Effect, Art Centre Ongoing, Tokyo, Japan (2016); The Weight Of My Soul Keeps Ringing In My Ears, The Golden Thread Gallery Project Space, Belfast, (2013); Untitled (Hope), Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Belfast, (2013). Recent group exhibitions include: The Headless City, TULCA, Galway, Ireland (2016); The Making, The Agency Gallery, London, England (2015/16); Sonorities festival of Contemporary Music, Goldsmiths University of London, England (2015); Reassemble for Purpose, Platform Arts Gallery, Belfast, NI (2015).  Recent artist residencies include: Art Centre Ongoing, Tokyo, Japan (2016); Goldsmiths University of London within the Embodied Audiovisual Interaction Group (2015).
