Rising Cities Float
___________________________

Within Rising Cities Float Berriman presents Batons (2010-ongoing) a series works constructed from copper and steel rods, insulation tape and shards of acrylic sheet. Made in conjunction with the larger scale Entertainment Suite (2010) these particular pieces resonate as singular sculptural objects; whist their function remains ambiguous, their performative qualities are potently apparent. Alongside Batons Berriman will present works on paper, sharing the spatial and formal atmosphere of the sculptural pieces and exploring a sensitivity in their construction.

Berriman's practice is concerned with the dynamics of space in relation to power and imagination, considering heterotopias, stage and prop. Her body of work choreographs an overall experience, layering ideas through the production of objects, drawings, texts and events. The individual pieces, connected and resonant, reinforce and extend the space and ideas of each other, allowing Berriman's propositions to be observed both within a wider perspective and at close proximity . Visually pieces demonstrate an affinity with sophisticated construction and aesthetics in a pared down offering of only the most essential ingredients. An element of the hand-made is also employed, using more democratic materials and methods.

For the close of the exhibition, Berriman will direct an event that activates a thirteenth Baton, continuing the evolution of the work.
